I’m a big fan of reading novels and memoirs to gain insights into various cultures. I have a decent repertoire of things I recommend for Latin America, Asia, and Africa (though I’m always up for other recommendations!). A colleague just contacted me regarding recommendations to assist in preparing for some work in Italy.
